PROJECT Summary

This infographic was a full gatefold print for the magazine, The Scientist.

Chronochemotherapy is an emerging field of study where the timing of chemotherapy is based on circadian rhythm. The goal was to incorporate as many aspects of this complex topic into the design, including a day-to-night colour palette, drug administration visuals, and graphics of a cyclical nature.

Research

The scientific writer and I collaborated extensively to determine which information should be included, the exact story they wanted to tell, and how to layout all the information.

I suggested that we incorporate as much data visualization as possible given how intricate this field of study is, and requested that the writer find data sets that would lend well to circular or cyclical graphics to tie in with the overall theme of circadian rhythms.

I initially sketched out various time-related imagery, including clock and sun/moon visuals, but ultimately illustrated a sun dial that incorporated a needle for the title of the infographic.

Design Process

Once the writer sent me appropriate data sets, I was tasked with designing visually interesting and effective data visualizations that retained their accuracy. The Scientist audience is, as the name suggests, scientists and those with intermediate to advanced levels of scientific knowledge, so data visualizations didn't require oversimplification.

I ensured that all visualizations were cohesive with the day-to-night theme by utilizing darker, cooler colours for graphics related to night and warmer, brighter colours for those related to daytime.

Final Deliverable

The gatefold format for this infographic was a perfect canvas for a day-to-night backdrop that immediately draws the attention of the reader and guides them through each page of this complex story.
